Ok so for starters I am not the most organized person (or even close) but with children comes details! I’m sure you can relate, every activity has a billion theme days and minor details that are majorly important to a small child. I have to admit that I once missed princess dress up day at dance class and this totally prompted my new organization system. Luckily this missed day was with my oldest daughter who didn’t care but I feverishly Amazon primed new leotards while she danced away in her pink tutu among the princesses. I digress…
I use to have piles and piles (and piles, and piles) or paperwork sitting on my countertop. When I would have someone over I would throw this paperwork into my junk closet and then forget the piles were there and stuff would get missed. Here is my two pronged approach to a more organized life!
1) Do it now!!! Avoid the pile! This is by far the most important step. When the mail comes, handle the mail. Open everything up, toss the junk and deal with the items you have time to deal with. Whatever you can’t get to goes on a clipboard (see step 2). When the backpack comes home, handle the backpack. Pull out the take home folder, toss the junk and deal with the items you have to deal with. Whatever you can’t get to goes on a clipboard (see step 2). Ok…you get the point.
2) I currently have eight clipboards velcroed to a wall tucked away in my mudroom. I loosely have one for bills, school schedules, medical paperwork, activities, etc. Every couple of days I take the clipboards off the wall and go through each one and complete what I can and what I can’t goes back onto the clipboard. This way everything is always in front of me! I see these clipboards every time I grab my shoes and coat so it is a constant reminder of what needs to get done.
