Gym Locker Turned Mudroom Storage

locker storage

Like most people we desperately needed a mudroom but had very little space to accommodate one. I think it is so amazing that most people my age didn’t have one growing up but feel lost without one now, I digress. After going back and forth on options and budgets (everything is so expensive) we decided to build a teeny tiny mudroom by pushing into our existing garage. I’m talking TINY, we only added about 48 square feet to our existing miniature mudroom. We are a larger family and we live in a part of the world that experiences all four seasons so we needed to utilize every inch of our new tiny space.

I searched high and low on Pinterest for storage options but all I came across were built ins that appeared to be somewhat expensive and bulky. Though they all looked insanely amazing I couldn’t figure out how they would work in our space. Next up was research on prebuilt locker systems but again I wasn’t able to find anything to fit our awkward space. So I took to Facebook and did a search for lockers and I came across a local gym that was going out of business and selling locker systems still in the box (added bonus they were a steal!).

Here they are in all of their glory!

So to break it down we have seven members in our family and only six locker compartments (insert sad face). Since the babies are currently babies they do not require a locker so I stuff their diaper bag into my space. Each person has a locker where they keep a couple of pairs of shoes, one jacket, their backpack and any other activity items that fit (dance bag, boy scout folder, and so on). The last locker compartment is my return to the store and return to people storage spot which is amazing and I’m going to be sad when I have to lose it or move it.

As I mentioned earlier we experience all four seasons which is magical and also requires a ton of gear. This means that every season the kids have to pull everything out of their locker and swap out what they had for what they need. I also have them quickly go through it once a week to weed out the junk that accumulates and wash jackets and anything else that needs a quick clean. Though each individual locker space is somewhat small we are able to stuff a bunch of items into each one. I love that even though there is chaos going on in each locker the outside looks calm and organized.

So happy we made this investment!
